Hi jmshaw,
If you feel that something you might say or do around the person that would jeopardize their sobriety, you would probably benefit from trying a few Al-Anon meetings. We recommend that you try at least six meetings, because each meeting is a bit different from the next. You can find a meeting in your area at al-anon.org
Hope this helps, BuddyT

Hey JoeY,
Yep, I'm still around, but this forum doesn't get much traffic any more because it's no longer linked from About.com which became DotDash, which became VeryWell, which became VeryWellMind.com.
The Alcoholism.about.com site used to get a huge amount of traffic, some of which spilled over into this forum.

Hi Kiwi, Al-Anon's World Service Organization does not recommend conducting Alateen meetings online at this time due to obvious security concerns. WSO suggests that teens affected by someone's alcoholism take part online in regular Al-Anon meetings while not openly identifying themselves as teenagers. You can find a list of online Al-Anon email and chat meetings here: ola-is.orgHope this helps, BuddyT

Hey Whatever! I answered your email, so I'll keep this brief here. You can still find a few of the old timers in the chatroom from time to time. Mostly later at night. The "open chat" room is now called The Lounge. You can log on here: stepchat.com/chat/room1.htmI haven't seen or heard from trif in ages. He was having some health issues the last we talked. Dazark and Becs got married, as you know, and we never heard from them again. And, I haven't seen the British Columbia bunch in years, although I did hear from Roser once. I haven't worked for About.com since April 2017, although many of the articles I wrote for them are still online. It's no longer About.com now, but VeryWellMind.com <sigh> I rewrote many of those articles and posted them here: alcoholismguide.com/It's always good to hear from someone from the early days. Glad you contacted me! BuddyT

The last post in that thread that I see was December 7. Maybe someone deleted their own post.

Hey Buddy, is is there anyway of getting notifications with email like we use to on the old forum. It it would be handy that way we know when someone is messaging us. angelina I received an email notification of your above post. The forum software allows you to receive notifications on the forum with the built-in notification system, as well as receive notifications via email if you choose to do so. To setup your forum notifications, as well as to view which types of notifications are available, click the Profile button found in the top menu bar of the forum, and then click the Edit Profile button on your profile page. You'll then be taken to the Edit Profile & Settings page; once here, click on the Notifications tab. On the notifications page, you'll see a set of checkboxes separated into two columns. Checking the boxes in the left column will allow you to receive forum notifications to the option you have checked, and checking the boxes in the right hand column will allow you to receive an email notification to the option you have checked. You can choose to receive both forum and email notifications for certain actions if you wish. Hope this helps.

JoeY,
Yes, that's a real pain.
I'll see if I can add a menu to the bottom of the page, but in the meantime when you are on the bottom post you can click the Settings (gear) icon and then click Back to Top as somewhat of a shortcut.

Angelina, I wish I had to power to place any page I wanted on the first page of Google search returns, but it doesn't work that way. New sites rarely jump to the top of the result especially when search for "generic" terms. It will take time, if it ever happens. On the Alcoholism.about.com home page I have a item up at the top of the page that says, "Have a Question About Alcoholism?" It links to an article that links to this forum. I plan to have that on the home page four days a week, alternating with an item about hangovers the other three days. We are probably going to have to accept the fact that this forum is never going to get the kind of newcomer traffic the old forum did when it was linked to from every page of the 20,000 pages on the Alcoholism.about.com site.

We never know when the tech staff is going to get around to these type things. Your guess is as good as mine. All I can suggest is that you copy as much as you can and paste it into a text file and save as you go and then when you are finished (or the forum disappears) you can paste them here. That will save you some time while the clock's ticking on the old forum shutdown.

Hi BuddyT, is it possible for members (as opposed to the admin) to create a new "Board" here? I was just looking around the old place and trying to decide what might be important to bring with us to our new home. There's a post (thread) from Daryl in the "12 Step Recovery" category I wanted to copy and paste here somewhere... just not sure where to put it. So I see there are "Boards" which look like they correspond to our former "Categories" but I can't figure out how to create a new "Board" called 12-Step Recovery. Thanks again for finding us a new home! Hi Dana, I created the new 12-Step Recovery board under the General category. You can copy-paste away!

Hi, Welcome to the new AboutAlcoholism Forum, which has been created to replace the Alcoholism / Substance Abuse forum at the Alcoholism site at About.com. I have created a few topic boards to get us started here: General Discussion, Help & Support, Friends & Family and Dealing With Withdrawals. If you have suggestions for more topics, etc. just let me know. Everyone should be able to view all of the threads here, but if you want to reply to a post or start a new thread you will have to register with an active email address. You can do so but clicking on the register link up in the top right of the page. To start a new thread, click on the name of the board that you want to post to under the General category, then on the board page click on the Create Thread link on the right side of the blue title banner. If you have any questions about how this forum works, please reply to this thread and I'll try to answer the best I can, but as of today I'm still learning too!
