I have been in recovery for three years, I am currently working with somebody in the program that believes that O'Doul's beer is OK to drink. They had one at a wedding reception and did not drink anything else alcoholic that night or since the reception. I was never a beer drinker so I never gave it a second thought to even try it. I guess I'm just looking to see what other people working their programs take on nonalcoholic beer is and if it led them to relapsing during their recovery…

The way I see it, it's a bad idea as it could be a step closer to relapsing even from a psychological point of view which is the relapse before the actual relapse, why open that door?

My brother is in recovery (around 7 years sober) and drinks NA beer occasionally. I was really worried for him the first time I saw him show up at deer camp with a 6 pack. He doesn't have any trouble with it though. Says he likes the taste with certain foods. Doesn't sit around drinking it for thirsts sake. For me, I don't think its worth the potential trouble. I'm only 16 months clean and while I don't have any good memories of my drinking the last 5-7 hellish years, I feel like the whole taste/smell memory/nostalgia trigger thing just makes it too risky. Totally unnecessary and not worth it for me. Maybe if there was NA whiskey! Just kidding. I have found that lemonade goes great with most any food or occasion. Except maybe for cereal. For that, I prefer almond milk.
Interesting topic. Thanks for sharing it.

Hi Laurie, I have been a non-drinker now for a year and a half. Several years back, in one of my many previous attempts to quit drinking, I tried O'Doul's. I drank it for several weeks, then decided I could go back to drinking regular beer, but in moderation. Yeah, right. It didn't work for me because the psychological portion of alcohol addiction was never broken. Mark/Jeyu

I'm with the rest of the folks on this one. It's a bad idea.

Hi Laurie, welcome to the forum! "non-alcoholic beer" has a teensie weensie bit of alcohol in it, like decaf coffee has a little bit of caffeine in it. I don't want to tempt myself by thinking oh, if I can get away with this... what else can I get away with? And I certainly don't want to wake that dormant obsession over alcohol. Besides, beer always made me feel full and bloated. SO not worth it! I stay away from it in order to protect my sobriety. For an ice cold carbonated refresher these days I drink club soda with lots of ice. It satisfies that thirst without all the sugar from soda.

I'm not sure why anyone would bother with O'Douls. The point of drinking beer is to get hammered, right? Beer sucks for flavor. In fact, most booze does. Getting hammered is why anyone drinks booze, IMO. Best, HC

Thank you everyone for your input. It has definitely given me some food for thought. One old timer that I know considers NA beer to be alcohol and if you drink it ~ you relapsed. I shared that information with her and after having further discussion, her comment was "I wasn't drinking it to get drunk, and if drinking an O'Douls is considered a relapse because it has that little bit of alcohol in it, then I should've just gone out and gotten wasted." I explained to her that I personally did not think it was a form of relapse, but I felt that she should be aware that others in the program do consider that it is. I suggested that she take it up with her HP and to let me know what occurred after she did that. She did, and told me that her sobriety was worth more to her than NA beer and that from now on she would just drink soda. I smiled, and told her that I thought that was a good idea.
I do greatly appreciate everyone's input on this matter. I just did not feel comfortable discussing it at any of the group meetings that I go to.

Very useful information on alcohol addiction. Last month, I took virginia opiate addiction treatment center help that is one of reputed rehab centers. Their treatment helped me in getting great relief from my addiction to alcohol. Happy to get treatment from there. Whoa, a spammer! Been so long since we had one of those, I don't remember where the "report" button is. Plus, I'm not sure this site even has a "moderator" anymore.
