Hello GTKY, glad you're here. And I'm glad you're getting something out of the posts here. When I quit the booze I was really scared. I knew I couldn't drink anymore, but I didn't know what that was going to look like and it terrified me. The people on the forum gave me hope! And I stuck around to just soak it all up. It really helped to know that I wasn't alone, and that people 'out there' understood what I was going through. And what helped even more was actually participating in the discussions - it helped me get things off my chest and take the power out of it, whatever was going on inside my head. And I learned to cope with life stone cold sober. What a gift! The good, the bad, and the ugly. It's all a gift. I hope you stick around too.

I am doing well other than recovering from a broken Tibia ( shin bone ) that happened on Aug 9. I had to have 2 surgeries. One to put an external fixator until the swelling went down and another to put the bone back together and seal it with a plate and several screws. I can only get around ( barely ) with a walker but I am grateful because it could have been much worse. Oh my goodness Beth! What happened? Modern medicine is amazing isn't it... Sounds like they were able to fix a badly broken bone. Do you have physical therapy, or is it more of a: increase activity level as tolerated? Sending you healing wishes and good vibes. xo Dana Hi Dana, thank you very much for the well wishes. Very sweet of you. My hubby is building some steps from the house to the lake and clumsy me tripped and fell hard breaking my leg. I must have brittle bones, as this is not my first break. I start physical therapy next week I think. I need to make an appt. today. How are things in your world ? Again, thank you ! Beth

Hi Beth, long time no chat. What a horrible thing to happen but it sounds like you're coping well. I too have broken a couple of bones but, thank the stars, not in recent decades. I was an avid basketball player in my youth, suffered and caused quite a bit of collateral damage, haha!
Apart from your physical complaints, I hope you are doing well. Life can throw us all sorts of challenges, it's how we view them that matters.
Take me it easy and be kind to yourself.
Jenn

Other than my leg, yes, I am doing pretty good. I hate not being able to clean up the house like I do. I guess I just have to make peace with things being in disarray for some time to go. In your experience how long does it take to get back to normal after a broken bone ? Glad you have been spared the agony for quite some time . Take care, Beth

Good to see you, Sam. I hope you're back participating. I miss you. I'm glad you are fulfilling your role as the person you want to be, and your family wants you to be. We only have one shot at this life and no one gets out alive. Be the best you you can be! How awesome that you've paid off your mortgage! I don't think ours will be paid off until I'm in my 70s. But I just know I'm going to be healthy and happy and fit enough to work, so it's no worry.
Good to see you, Sam!

Sam,
It is a drinks cabinet behind me, but no bottles, only glasses and empty flasks.
I love your photo of Jack. My kids are finally old enough to see One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, so we watched it last week. It's one of my all-time fave movies.

Beth,
How is your leg? Have you had a bone density test? I'm thinking about getting one because I'm 51 and have low levels of Vit D, even though I take a supplement. I'll let you know how it goes.
Take care. Get hubby to make you lots of tea, toast and vegemite, while you put your feet up and watch movies!

"If you think you can do it, or you think you can't do it, you are right." Henry Ford
Hey Dana, I've been wanting to tell you I absolutely love your signature by Henry Ford, I read that quote years ago when I was in college and it stuck in my mind, I don't know how much it helped me in life as I turned out to be an alcoholic (no ####) and that seem to have bulldozed most my of my beliefs in life, but the fact that it stayed with me, I'd like to think it had an impact.
I found this article in the Yahoo Business Insider by Kathleen Elkins that I found is on the mark, I wasn't able to attach a link, but I think it is related to what Ford was talking about, here it is:
Stop complaining — out loud and in your head — if you want to improve your finances.
Much of what separates wealthy people from average people is mental — rich people simply think, act, and make choices differently than the rest of us.
In "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind," author and self-made millionaire T. Harv Eker identifies a seemingly harmless daily habit average people engage in that the rich refuse to: complaining.
"Complaining is the absolute worst possible thing you could do for your health or your wealth," Eker writes.
When you complain, you're focusing on what is wrong with your life — and what you focus on tends to expand, Eker explains.
"Like attracts like," the self-made millionaire writes. "When you are complaining, you are actually attracting 'crap' into your life."
This leaves very little room for growth, particularly financial growth.
A fact often overlooked — or dismissed as elitist — is that your friendships and relationships could also have a major impact on your financial success. Steve Siebold, a self-made millionaire who interviewed over 1,200 rich people, found that the wealthy are deliberate about choosing their friends, and their choices have implications for their success and their net worth.
Eker makes a similar point about negativity. Separating yourself from other complainers is just as important as resisting the urge to complain personally, he emphasizes: "Negative energy is infectious. Plenty of people, however, love to hang out and listen to complainers. Why? It's simple: They're waiting for their turn!"
It's an easy cycle to fall into, but a costly one.
If you're in a financial rut, or looking to grow your wealth, stop complaining — out loud and in your head, Eker advises, and help yourself out by surrounding yourself with an upbeat, successful crowd.
"Remind yourself that you are creating your life and that at every moment you will be attracting either success or crap into your life," he writes. "It is imperative you choose your thoughts and words wisely!"
Thinking about it, this applies to recovery as well.

Sam, when I quit smoking this last time (my forever quit, FINALLY!!) I bought a little pocket inspirational type book to keep in my little canvas bag I carried around with me E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E. I carried dum dums in there, a yoyo, a deck of cards, my reasons for quitting, a list of things TO DO INSTEAD of smoke - gosh what else?? Anyway it was my toolbox! The little book had some really great affirmations and tricks to think positively - this saying was but one example of many. It really spoke to me at the time.. I don't know why then, but it did. It's not like I hadn't heard it before like you, but maybe I wasn't ready to apply to my life - to myself - until that moment. When I joined the smoking cessation forum in 2009 I put it in my signature so I would always be reminded.

I don't like negative friends either, they are so draining. JFDI lol, no good complaining. good to see you posting Sam. angelina/tutu

Hey Dana,
could you you start a thread and put in a new affirmation once a week. I think it's good for people struggling with giving up the drinking or even the smoking to read positive stuff. It is doable. Who would have thought I would now be a non smoker.
when I dropped hubby off at the airport this morning I was watching a few having that last cigarette before flying. I was so glad I don't have to do that now. It really does/did run my life. Always timing when I could have one.
So a positive thread would be good, if you could.
thanks Dana
