I don't know if many of the old-timers are around anymore, but I thought it would be good to post a message just in case. Linda Shapin, who posted as Kailua Girl on the old forum, has passed away from cancer. From the time she was diagnosed until her death was only six weeks, but from the beginning she seemed to be at peace with it. Her main concern--which is pure Linda--was that her beloved birds were taken care of, and they were.
She was fortunate enough to spend most of her six weeks in a lovely hospice home, and she kept us posted on how she was feeling as best she could.
R.I.P., lovely lady.

I remember Kailua Girl as being one of the posters who "had what I wanted" when I first began learning about sobriety on the old forum in 2010. I'm saddened to hear of her passing, but glad she was able to share some of her experience, strength, and hope with us along her sober journey.
Thanks for sharing the news here, PJ. Hope you're well!

I am well, Mark, thank you! And you know, a little Australian birdie told me that you reached an awesome milestone recently. Four years sober? Four years sober! CONGRATULATIONS!

Linda was the first person I contacted "off-line" on the old, old forum. I think I may have been 30 days sober and was obsessively on the site, trying to read and grasp as much as I could. A young mom in Australia was talking about killing herself because of drinking and losing her kids. I was frantic and hopeless. Linda responded in such a minimal but profound way that made me feel like everything was going to be alright. With her, me, the world...and there wasn't a freakin thing I could do about it. Very sad news. I only had a few moments with her via email but they were impactful. She told me how to find Ron and every time I see a woman behind the deli counter at Whole Foods, I smile and wonder if perhaps her. RIP, hopefully in the trade winds. OGK
