This is my first attempt to find some support. I'm truly Lost. My son drinks every day. He never even looks up from his phone. I don't know how to help him and I don't know how to cope....

Hi and welcome lost, please stick around for others to respond to your post as i am well versed with people in your situation. there are programs to help you and others here are more knowledgeable then me about them. al-anon would be one of the programs that you should look into for yourself which will give you some good ideas on what you might find to try and help your son. bottom line, your son is going to have to help himself.
please read some of the post and you'll find folks in all stages of trying to stay sober. i wish you the very best of luck in this. JoeY

This is my first attempt to find some support. I'm truly Lost. My son drinks every day. He never even looks up from his phone. I don't know how to help him and I don't know how to cope.... I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I can't imagine watching one of my children living a life of active alcoholism, I think it would be harder than actually living it myself. The helplessness must be overwhelming, I really feel for you. Joey is right, Al-Alon can help you with those feelings, I'm sure you'd find people who are in the same position and just looking into eyes that understand your pain and feel your frustration, may really help you and ultimately your son. You have to be well in order to help him, please look after yourself. I guess you're looking for advice, it's difficult not knowing the details of your situation. If it were my son, I could talk to him and share my experience (as an alcoholic), warn him of the dangers if left unchecked and unchallenged. Does your son have a predisposition to alcoholism .. if my children were drinking heavily I would need to be concerned considering my problems and those of both my parents. My second son acted out in his early twenties, he was drinking everyday, weed, partying, etc. We are very close and talked of it often, he assured me that he would cut back (knowing of my struggles) which he did, thank the stars. It was a 'Uni thing', he was drinking socially, not alcoholically.. so far so good with my kids but I'm very aware of the possibilities, as are they, considering their family history. Does your son know how worried you are, are you close to him, have you talked to him and if so how has he reacted...so many questions ? I'm sure you know that he has to want to help himself in order to get well but as a parent I surely understand your need and desire to help him. Perhaps just talking about it and having somewhere to vent and purge your feelings will help. Take care for today, Jenn

Hi and welcome summie. you've made it past the danger zone of not drinking for 3 days so that's a real good thing. this forum is rather new so the traffic in here can be spotty but others will be along to welcome you as well. in the meantime read over the post and take from them what you can. you might want to check out AA as well as a tremenous amount of knowledge about alcoholism and support can be found in them. AA does not require you to speak up so you can sit and obsever what goes on. i wish you well in your efforts to quit. JoeY

Summie,
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your decision. Please feel free to post when and it you feel like it. I stayed pretty close to the forum for the first few months after I quit drinking and received a tremendous amount of knowledge and support here. I remember when I was at your point telling myself that I never wanted to go through the last few days again and there was only way to make sure the I didn't.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I have another day under my belt and I'm actually eating 3 meals a day now. I used to go days without eating in fear of not getting a buzz well drunk to be honest. SO THANKS AGAIN...
