Hi folks,
I happened upon this article just now and found it interesting; maybe some of you will too. As the title implies, it's about an online resource called r/StopDrinking that has helped numerous people get and stay sober--and many of them say it has worked for them where traditional step-type programs have not been effective.
“I tried everything,” says one forum member who has been sober for more than 560 days. “The support I saw in [StopDrinking] on day one felt like nothing I had experienced in hundreds of AA or SMART meetings.”
Another quote in the article made me feel a bit wistful because it reminded me of this group. The person quoted is John Kelly, an addiction researcher at Harvard Medical School--not exactly shabby credentials, eh?
“It’s the fellowship factor that’s effective,” says Kelly. “There’s accountability and monitoring over time. There’s 24/7 support. There’s cheerleading. It’s incredibly valuable, especially early on.”
Sound familiar, guys?
Yeah. To me too.
Love to all, PJ

Yes, very familiar, PJ. Thanks for posting the link. Maybe it will help some of those coming here looking for answers and help in dealing with their addiction to alcohol. I check in here about once or twice a month these days, but I remember during April, 2014, I came to the forum numerous times during the day and night. Anytime, which was often, that I felt that I couldn’t make it another hour without drinking, I came here and found you, Mark, TuTu, Brett, Blue, and so many others ready and willing to share their experiences and support to shepherd me through the cravings. (I’m sure that was a big time run-on sentence). You (pleural) had found something that I wanted desperately to find for myself, sobriety, and the search for it both replaced and became my addiction. I’m in a good place in life. Mark/Jeyu

Sound familiar, guys? So that is what is missing to make this website work? Is this type of impersonal "fellowship," if it can actually be called "fellowship," of the type needed by alcoholics? And it works without a program of recovery? Do we have anything other than anectdotal evidence that this website actually works? Inform Buddy T to shut this website down, it is no longer needed, we found something that actually works and it ain't just lip service, it is oodles and oodles of lip service! Sound familiar?

I read the article, it makes the same claim you guys do, that your respective websites can get an alcoholic sober. Did you read it? "I think not!" I merely raised a few questions about the website. The reader can make his/her own choice about utilizing that website, but with eyes that are open wider! Informed choices, a radical concept!

Hi sim, I don’t play with trolls. Best, PJ The fact that you have had a discourse with gramps says otherwise. You could be an alcoholic, your ego is the most important thing, constructive criticism and pointing out the bad info others put out on here be damned! So much for informed choices!

With regard to your mention of "discourse," I think you meant icon, not gwampa69. Icon used to be a regular on the forum, and was someone I once thought the world of ... until, sadly, things changed.
Best, PJ
